Overview

Artificial Intelligence (AI) rapid developments are continuously expanding human capabilities in various domains stretching from reasoning and meaning discovery through complex computer vision applications and content generation. Evidence from both industry and academia reveals that AI applications can contribute to improving people's lives in diagnosing diseases, making complex decisions, predicting economic stability, natural language understanding and interpretation, to mention but a few. This research group is a central hub to liaise between world known experts to develop and investigate such developments in real life context.

Objectives

This research group deals with topics as diverse as appropriate technology, industrial ecology, globalisation and the democratic management of innovation. It will cover knowledge generation, diffusion and uptake and actors in academia, the public and the private sectors, plus issues arising from civil society and hybrid organisations, on such matters as intellectual property rights, investment and educational policy. Papers with a critical perspective are especially encouraged, as are contributions from those whose “local knowledge” can stimulate thinking around the world.

The key aim of this research hub is to revolutionise citizen’s quality of life through the interdisciplinary application of artificial intelligence in real-life context from healthcare to business, education and other domains.

Objectives of this research hub are listed as below:

  1. Healthcare: investigate and develop AI-powered diagnostic artefacts to accurately identify and, potentially, predict diseases, which is very essential for life saving in case of cancer and certain cardiovascular diseases.
  2. Industry: automate and optimise industrial production processes to improve their outputs and produce high quality deliverables through utilising data analytics and machine learning techniques.
  3. Environment and Sustainability: develop artificial intelligence powered artefacts that can model, analyse, monitor and predict changes in our environments including urban, environmental, pollution, resources, societal, etc.
  4. Finance: build advanced intelligent solutions to provide a personalised financial advice for citizens and also predict/detect abnormal financial operations such as fraud transactions.
  5. Education: invent sophisticated artificial intelligence enabled solutions to personalise learning in a way that meet student needs for effective learning, peer grouping, feedback mechanisms, and assessment strategies.
  6. Transportation: innovate effective and efficient smart traffic management artefacts that contribute to effective use of fuel, congestion avoidance, road safety, better commuting time and comfort.
  7. Business and retail industry: develop artificial intelligence solutions to improve and maintain customer retention and experience which will leverage people’s lives and also create more revenue streams for industries.
  8. Cybersecurity: develop solutions powered with artificial intelligence techniques that aim to respond to cyber attacks in a very effective way in order to protect businesses, governments, and people data from being unethically exploited.
Theme
  1. This theme investigates the impact of using Artificial Intelligence in effective curriculum development by putting learners at the core of learning processes. It also examines mechanisms for developing adaptive learning experiences that meet learner’s requirements. In addition, the role of educational organisations is changing in this rapidly changing world, hence AI helps in making learning more agile and flexible to be seen as a useful tool in our societies.
  2. Artificial intelligence is advancing healthcare domain in multiple facets. Utilising machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision allows machines to intervene to improve patient experiences. Such utilisation helps healthcare professionals, medical consultants and junior doctors to learn faster from AI breakthroughs. Artificial intelligence and its sub-domain technologies can address challenges related to healthcare including the increase cost of healthcare as well as time required to receive treatment and follow-up.
  3. Artificial intelligence is finance encompasses many areas but mainly enhancing financial decision making. FinTech is one of key emerging umbrella for AI utilisation in finance as well. applications in this theme include algorithmic trading where decisions can be taken or recommended on behalf of traders based on predictive strategies. AI analytical power can also provide an excellent opportunity to gain insight into financial records and problems to enable better decisions. Moreover, predictive analytical capabilities allow users to forecast key market trends based on certain factors under investigation. The recent developments in chatbots and virtual assistants help in engaging users with computational systems in easier and more effective mechanisms.
  4. This theme aims at enhancing transportation sector by improving users safety and making their journey more efficient which will enhance their experience. Autonomous vehicles, for instance, contributed to minimising human errors which has been manifested in less number of accidents and less harmful or dangerous driving behaviour. Challenges that impact our environment such as emission, congestion, air quality and fuel consumption are very pressing and require further experimental research to make a satisfactory progress. In addition, AI is being used now in planning for main roads development and expansion which will shape the urban planning phase in the next couple of decades.
